Over-used statements aside here, if I had a dollar for every couple who told me that they ‘didn’t need an engagement session’ I think I’d be rich!
As a wedding photographer, however, I like to think of myself as somewhat of an expert on the topic of weddings, engagements, and yes…photos!
If you are on the fence about having an engagement session, or if you feel that they may be awkward, strange, or worthless, read on!
I’m sharing some of the best reasons to have a Colorado engagement session, whether you have booked me for your wedding or are traveling from another State.
Engagement sessions are actually included in some of my wedding photography packages.
I also work with a lot of couples who are traveling to Colorado for a vacation and want to have their engagement session done here to celebrate the adventure and beauty of our gorgeous State (ala-carte engagement sessions), before they wed elsewhere.
Not only that, but sometimes couples come to me for engagement sessions after the wedding, when they realize that the only professional photos they have together are in wedding attire.
I absolutely love photographing engagement sessions and believe everybody should do them!
One of the reasons people decline having engagement photos taken is that they will feel awkward…but this is actually the very reason TO do them!
Ideally, you will have hired me or another photographer to photograph your actual wedding day. We will follow you around, ask you to smile, have you interact with each other, and grab sneaky candid moments all day long.
When you have an engagement session prior to your wedding day, you have an opportunity to practice being natural and comfortable in front of the camera. There is nothing worse than an awkward, inauthentic kiss with your partner; practice makes perfect and helps you relax when the camera comes out.
You’ll learn that it’s not only fun to goof off together while being photographed (let’s chat about all of those super fun engagement photo moments!), but that taking a deep breath will really help you relax.
What’s more, when you get your engagement photos back, you’ll realize that yes, you actually DO look amazing on camera (Hey, I’m talking to you, Ms. “But I’m not photogenic“)!
Talk about a confidence builder for the actual wedding day.
All of the sappy ‘capture memories’ stuff aside, this one is actually very true. You will be amazed at how quickly life tends to fly by.
Each day that passes you leave behind yet another day of your life together before marriage; your engagement photos are something that you and your families will look at years from now. This is your time; and it’s purely about the two of you. Not your children, or your family, or your sweet snuggly newborn, or even your ‘life-of-the-party’ friend who takes over the dance floor at your reception.
It’s not your wedding day or all of the excitement that comes with it; this is about you as a couple. Who you are today, how you interact, how you respect and treat each other, and what makes you unique (check out my ‘Date-Night Engagement Session blog post for ideas).
Colorado is an amazing place for engagement photos.
We have forest, mountains, lakes, and an incredible downtown with breweries and trendy hang-outs. It’s the perfect spot for a destination engagement session (YES, you can book me just for that and not your entire wedding!), even if you have already done engagement photos at home.
If you live here or are planning your wedding here, it’s all the more reason to keep up with the Colorado theme. I’m happy to help you choose locations, and I’ll give you plenty of advice on what to wear and what to expect.
This is perhaps one of the most important and best reasons to have a Colorado engagement session!
When I photograph your wedding, I want to see a happy, confident, fun-loving couple in front of my camera who is not the least bit concerned with anything other than literally enjoying the wedding day.
I want to be able to look at your engagement session and see what kind of posing and interactions best highlight you as a couple, so that on the wedding day when we have limited time we really focus on the right stuff.
Lastly, doing an engagement session before the wedding gives me an opportunity to get to know YOU! I want to learn about what makes you happy, what you are excited about, how you met, and what your plans are for the future.
It’s fun and it’s a great way for me to get to know you, before I’m literally by your side for all of your wedding-day events. As your wedding photographer, you’ll probably spend more time with me on the big day than with anybody else; take this time at your engagement session to get comfy with the idea.
